SPECIAL REQUEST

Once again the SLC used Philanthropy funds to purchase 16 large Peat hanging baskets for Stafolt Nursing home. Van Wingerden's gave us the baskets at wholesale cost of $17 plus tax for a total of $295.12 a savings off retail of $207.84.

The baskets were picked up and delivered to Stafolt by Penny Corcoran and Judy Weidenman on Tuesday, May 11th.

Unfortunately the past couple of years our Philanthropy donations have been smaller than they once were and we cannot seem to get enough ladies out to plant the baskets as in the past so we resorted to buying what we could afford. If you would like to see this tradition continue, please support our annual Philanthropy drive in the late summer or if you would like to head up the basket project, please let Hazel Chausse or Joan Standridge know.

Philanthropy Report for 2009
Philanthropy Distributions for 2009

I can’t think of a better way to end the year than saying “great job” to our members. From our donations of $3955, scholarship funds of $1000 taken from our 2009 dues, $3000 voted by the board from our discretionary funds, our budget for philanthropy and scholarships for 2009 is $7955. Thanks to all of you who took the time to mark your choices on the renewal form earlier in the year. This was a guideline for the committee when it came time to make our selections for this year. Hazel

Our recipients are:
Scholarships for graduating seniors - $2500
These will be awarded in the spring of 2010
Blaine Food Bank - $1500
They help about 300 families a week. The total to the end of October is 9,960 families, a 15% increase from last year. Clients that have been served to the end of October are 34,269.
BSD Family Service Center - $1500
Last school year: Families served on an intense basis numbered 58 with 100 children. These families came in for gas/food/clothing vouchers, and household cleaning items. Referrals for help with bills, referrals for counseling, housing, rehab, legal help and employment info are also on the list. School supplies were provided for 200 students, Operation School Bell referrals for clothing helped 80 students. And dental hygiene checks helped 200 students.
The Community Assistance Program & CAP/Thanksgiving dinner project - $1000
For the first 10 months of this year, 141 families in crisis were provided emergency assistance. In 2008 Thanksgiving Baskets fed 189 impoverished families; 880 individuals: 450 children/430 adults.
Boys & Girls Club of Blaine - $600 for scholarships
The annual membership fee is $30 per child ($20 for families on free or reduced lunch or receiving housing assistance) and no one is ever turned away based on ability to pay. The actual cost per member to the organization is closer to $300 per year.
Friends of the Blaine Library - $600
Funds are to help defray the cost of replacement/remodel of the front desk area. (This project is not covered by the recent Library levy that passed.)
Stafholt Good Samaritan Center - $255
The Ladies Club plants the hanging baskets in the spring of each year.
